Court Bans Protest Merging Gaza Politics with Buchenwald Memorial Site

The demonstration planned by the “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” initiative at the Buchenwald Memorial on the coming Sunday has been prohibited. A spokesperson for the Weimar Administrative Court confirmed this to the magazine “Stern”. The spokesperson stated that, “given the specific circumstances, there is concern that the dignity of the victims will be compromised”. According to the law on assembly, authorities are permitted to impose restrictions on a demonstration if it takes place at a location that “serves as a memorial site to the victims of inhumane treatment under Nazi force and arbitrary rule, which has historically outstanding and supra-regional significance”. Furthermore, the chamber viewed the demonstration, specifically the announced wearing of the Kufiya, or so-called Palestinian scarf, as an attempt to “use the memorial site and the commemoration stipulated in its statutes as a vehicle to transport other political views-in this case, the legal and political classification of the war in Gaza”. This, the spokesperson noted, contradicts the founding purpose of the memorial site. The “Kufiyas in Buchenwald” initiative is calling for the memorial site to openly discuss the genocide in Gaza, among other demands. The planned demonstration has met with criticism. Felix Klein, the Federal Government’s Anti-Semitism Commissioner, labeled the action a “scandalous attack on cultural memory”. Recently, the Buchenwald Memorial has voiced concerns that it is increasingly being instrumentalized by extreme political groups for their own aims. However, the organizers retain the right to appeal the decision of the Weimar Administrative Court to the Thuringia Higher Administrative Court.
