BSW Rift Deepens: Local Leader Denounces Sahra Wagenknecht’s Embrace of AfD Politics

Katja Wolf, the head of the Thuringia BSW Regional Association, is publicly creating distance between herself and her party’s federal leadership, leading to sharp criticism directed at founder Sahra Wagenknecht. According to the newspaper “Die Zeit”, Wolf, who also serves as the deputy prime minister of the free state, stated that Wagenknecht has crossed an unacceptable line through her increasing association with the AfD. She warned that the BSW could not afford to carelessly enable the AfD to gain political power. Wolf emphasized that the BSW cannot have any close ties with the AfD, describing the party as “highly dangerous” and asserting that it does not represent “the common people” but rather operates in a manner that is “racist and misogynistic.”

This outspoken stance comes as Wolf reacts against internal party plans aimed at preventing Ulrich Siegmund, a potential top AfD candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, from becoming Minister President in a possible third-round election through an abstention. Furthermore, Wolf gave a clear rejection to Wagenknecht’s call for the introduction of an expert government in Thuringia, deeming the move “undemocratic” and not suitable for the state of Thuringia.

Wolf intends to maintain her commitment to the current coalition government in Thuringia, which involves Prime Minister Mario Voigt and the SPD. Regarding Voigt’s accusations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis, Wolf told “Die Zeit” that the report in question was financed by the AfD faction in the Thuringian State Parliament and is part of a calculated campaign.
