High fuel prices in Germany are apparently leading to a noticeable increase in passengers using buses and trains. A spokesperson for the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition) that they assume “the demand for public transport tickets has risen against the backdrop of increased gasoline prices for cars”. However, the spokesperson added that “unfortunately, transport companies cannot respond with a commensurate expansion of services due to limited budgets”. Therefore, it is crucial that the federal government now decisively implements the public transport modernization pact agreed upon in the coalition agreement. The spokesperson also stated that, for instance, the Municipal Transport Financing Act must be amended “to give transport companies planning certainty”.
