European Parliament Member Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann views the change in power in Hungary as a signal for the world. Speaking to the Funke Media Group, she stated that this development is “not just an internal political juncture, but also a geopolitical sign: against authoritarian influences, against Putin’s puppets, against electoral interference from the USA, against the erosion of democratic institutions, and against all those who want to divide Europe”. Strack-Zimmermann added that after years in which Viktor Orbán allegedly isolated his country, repeatedly trampling and betraying European values, a chance for a genuine new beginning has emerged. She expressed her belief that Hungary can and must become a reliable partner within the EU, acting as a constructive and shaping force, adding, “The hope for this is as deserved as it is great”.
Similarly, Julian Joswig, a Green Party Member, assessed the election outcome as a positive signal for Europe, hoping for closer cooperation within the EU. Talking to Politico, Joswig said the Hungarian election result is a “clear sign of new beginnings, of democracy, and of the rule of law”. He considered the high voter turnout crucial, arguing that it demonstrated that “young people have been mobilized very well”. He noted that for the first time in 16 years, the opposition had a real chance to replace Viktor Orbán. Looking toward the future, Joswig also suggested institutional reforms, stating that in the end, they should expand the current veto rule concerning the principle of unanimity in the EU.
