The chair of the CDU parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, announced that the government will consider further relief measures if oil prices remain high even after the temporary fuel discount expires. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Spahn stated, “We are aware that July 1st represents a literal cliff edge. We will need to closely examine in June whether additional measures are necessary”. He added that if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed after two more months, “we will face entirely different problems”. Spahn also noted visible issues such as “supply chain disruptions in the construction and chemical industries”. Regarding the fuel discount decided by the coalition, Spahn stated it is set to take effect starting May 1st. Concerning the legal process, he announced, “Our goal is to pass the law in the Bundestag next week. We hope that the Bundesrat convenes for a special session; this would allow the tax reduction to take effect by May 1st. This is a relatively fast pace”.
