EU Approves German Industrial Power Cost Support to Boost Green Transition

The European Commission approved a subsidy program worth 3.8 billion euros on Thursday, which will allow the German government to support its industry with reduced electricity prices. The EU stated that these regulations were deemed “necessary, appropriate, and proportionate” in order to accelerate the shift toward a climate-neutral economy and bolster specific sectors of the economy crucial for realizing the deal for a clean industry. Because the funding is contingent upon companies reinvesting a significant portion of the aid into decarbonization measures, these rules are expected to contribute substantially to the transition to a climate-neutral economy. The German scheme is set to run from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028. Companies can apply for subsidies after the close of each year, provided that the year’s electricity consumption and the average wholesale market price are known. In addition to Germany, the Commission also approved similar subsidies for Slovenia and Bulgaria.
