Climate Activist Slams High Gas Prices, Demanding Sustainable Mobility Over Fossil Fuels

Fridays for Future’s leading figure in Germany, Luisa Neubauer, stated that she is not pleased with the high petrol prices. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Neubauer remarked, “Of course not, because what we need is mobility that allows people to get from A to B sustainably”. She added that the current situation forces people to pay high prices at gas pumps because the entire mobility system has not yet become sustainable. She advocated for people to use buses or trains instead of having to pay “Oil autocrats”.

To alleviate the burden, Neubauer called for a more affordable Deutschlandticket. She argued that the gas price discount equals the cost of the ticket for an entire year within two months and might not even have any effect. Furthermore, she suggested that such measures only relieve people who can afford cars and travel the longest distances.

The climate activist criticized the government for refusing to learn from the last crisis of 2022. “What energy crisis must the federal government wait for before it honestly admits that our system doesn’t work like this-that it is not robust and not fit for the future?” Currently, Economics Minister Reiche is blocking the energy transition. Because of this, Germany risks losing even more renewable industry to China and becoming even more dependent on “Oil autocrats”. She concluded by calling the situation “a profound disappointment”.
