The Federal Ministry of Transport announced on Monday that it plans to provide up to 14 million euros through a new funding call aimed at supporting vehicles equipped with autonomous driving capabilities. The funds will specifically support projects in both public passenger transport (ÖPNV) and commercial road freight, particularly where autonomous vehicles are intended for permanent use within the public transport environment.
Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) stated that autonomous driving offers the potential to reinvent mobility. He noted that autonomous vehicles can meaningfully supplement public transport offerings and enhance connections between people, especially in rural areas and suburban fringes. Furthermore, the technology presents new opportunities for the freight sector to address the growing demand for transport and the increasing shortage of driving personnel.
A key focus of this funding initiative is on projects that contribute sustainably to the development of model regions for autonomous driving. Eligibility for applications includes municipalities, local government bodies, operators responsible for public transport (ÖPNV), as well as both municipal and private transport companies. Applications will be accepted starting September 1, 2026, via the Easy-Online funding portal.
