Major Earthquake Hits Off Japan Coast, Experts Monitor Potential Tsunami Threat

A strong undersea earthquake occurred off the east coast of Japan on Monday. Geologists initially reported a magnitude between 7.4 and 7.6, though these figures are often revised later. The tremor took place at 4:52 PM local time (9:52 AM German time), approximately 100 kilometers from the coast of Iwate Prefecture in the northeastern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu. At first, there were no reports of any damage or casualties. Such earthquakes, of this magnitude, are not uncommon, occurring worldwide around 18 times a year. While they can frequently cause significant damage to buildings, they also carry the potential risk of generating tsunamis.
