In Saxony-Anhalt, polling stations opened at 8 a.m. Today, roughly 1.7 million eligible voters have been called upon to cast their ballots. Citizens are voting for a minimum of 83 regional representatives who will serve in the Magdeburg State Parliament for five years across 41 districts; this number may increase due to overhang and compensatory mandates.
Even before the election took place, it appears clear that the AfD is set to become the strongest force in the future, significantly ahead of the CDU. The AfD, led by its top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, has consistently been polling above 40 percent. Conversely, the CDU, championed by Minister-President Sven Schulze, trails by just under 20 percentage points.
However, it remains uncertain whether the AfD will secure an absolute majority of the seats. A crucial factor in this is how many other parties manage to cross the five-percent threshold. According to the most recent polls, the Left Party (Die Linke) and the SPD are likely candidates to enter the state parliament. The future of the Greens, BSW, and the currently governing FDP, however, remains less certain. Should the AfD fail to achieve a majority on its own, the formation of a government is expected to be extremely difficult, possibly requiring the CDU to negotiate with the Left Party-a prospect that many within the CDU have previously ruled out.
Polling stations will close at 6 p.m., shortly after which results from post-election surveys and projections are anticipated.
