Public Opinion Strongly Backs Government Aid Amid High Energy Costs

A significant majority of German citizens continue to favor state intervention to alleviate the burden caused by high energy and gasoline prices, according to a survey conducted by Forsa for RTL and ntv. Approximately three-quarters (74 percent) support state assistance, while only about one-fifth (23 percent) are in favor of foregoing such interventions. This support is particularly strong among lower-income households (81 percent for those earning under €2,500). Even in higher-income groups, support prevails (69 percent for those earning €4,000 and more).

Political lines also show broad consensus: Support for state intervention is reported as 68 percent among supporters of the Union, 74 percent among the SPD, 82 percent among members of the Linkspartei, and 90 percent among followers of the AfD. Even among Green party supporters, who are the least likely to support interventions at 45 percent, a narrow relative majority (48 percent) favors state measures. Overall, only minorities hold the view that state interventions should not be implemented.

Regarding the federal government’s plan to send mine-sweeping vessels, along with other nations, to secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz following the cessation of hostilities between the US and Iran, a narrow majority of citizens supports this proposal (50 percent). In contrast, 42 percent oppose it, and 8 percent stated no opinion. Support is especially high among CDU/CSU supporters (70 percent) and Green supporters (60 percent). A narrow majority of SPD supporters (51 percent) also endorse the deployment. Linkspartei supporters show a split opinion (41 percent for and 41 percent against), while AfD supporters predominantly reject the deployment (66 percent against). Regionally, there are few differences: 50 percent in West Germany support the deployment, and 49 percent in East Germany; opposition stands at 41 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
