Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called on the German populace to increase their civic commitment. In an opinion piece for the Funke Media Group newspapers (mid-week editions), Steinmeier stated that “Our country needs more engaged people from all walks of life to help strengthen social cohesion and protect the democracy enshrined in the Basic Law”.
He argued that liberal democracy cannot survive on legal text alone; it requires self-assured citizens who embody the values of the Basic Law-such as human dignity, freedom, and equality-through their daily actions and activism. This notion, Steinmeier stressed, should be the central message for the Constitution Day on May 23rd.
Steinmeier reiterated his wish that the anniversary of the Basic Law should be marked in a way that is less formal and more celebratory, describing it as a time to celebrate in a “happier, more vibrant, and at the same time, in many places” manner. He pointed out that Constitution Day is an excellent opportunity to reignite enthusiasm for civic engagement, which is why he declared May 23rd an “Honor Day”. He invited all citizens to propose participatory events, whether as individuals or through their associations, businesses, or local communities.
The Federal President expressed concern that liberal democracy faces threats both from within and without. He observed that extremists are spreading hatred and hostility, attempting to divide society, while debates are becoming increasingly sharp and differing opinions are clashing unpleasantly. Steinmeier highlighted that it is a great blessing during this time that so many people are volunteering their time for a harmonious coexistence, emphasizing that all these efforts now required support.
