The Left faction in the Bundestag has proactively requested a special session of the Internal Affairs Committee to investigate the Islamist-motivated CSD attack that took place in Berlin.
Clara Bünger, the faction’s spokesperson for internal affairs, told the RND that the terrorist attack on the Berlin CSD had deeply shaken the country. Due to the severe nature of the crime and the growing number of unaddressed questions concerning how security agencies responded, she argued that it is both necessary and appropriate for the Internal Affairs Committee to address the matter immediately. Bünger stressed that the parliament’s role includes overseeing the work of security agencies and clarifying outstanding issues, which is why the faction submitted their request. “We owe this to the victims, their relatives, and the queer community,” Bünger stated emphatically.
The faction’s formal request calls for the participation of the presidents of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the Federal Police, and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as well as the Federal Prosecutor General, during the meeting. Under normal circumstances, the committee would not reconvene until September, after the parliamentary summer break.
The Greens have offered support for this initiative. Konstantin von Notz, the deputy chair of the Green parliamentary group, also informed the RND that the Greens see the necessity of a special session. He emphasized that since extensive demands are already being raised-particularly by the Union parties-it is crucial that the facts are first presented and thoroughly evaluated. “We are contributing to this by addressing the federal government with a comprehensive set of questions, but the quickest possible engagement and processing by the relevant specialist committees of the Bundestag is essential,” von Notz commented. Furthermore, the faction advocates for a hybrid format to help reduce the overall costs for the Bundestag.
