Weak German Economy Allows More Borrowing for Politics Ministry

The perceived slowdown in the German economy is granting increased financial leeway for the SPD Party Chairman, Lars Klingbeil, regarding new government borrowing. According to “Der Spiegel”, the SPD leader can take on 3.8 billion Euros more in outstanding liabilities in the coming year than was previously planned, and this figure is set to reach an additional total of 7.3 billion Euros by 2030.

This relaxation of fiscal guidelines stems from the spring economic forecast, according to which the government has significantly revised its expectations for economic growth downward. Instead of initially projecting 1.0% growth for the year, the current estimate is only 0.5%. Consequently, if economic performance falters, the federal government is permitted to temporarily take on higher levels of debt.

For the year 2027, this translates into a substantial increase in the cycle boost allowance (Konjunkturaufschlag), rising from 8.5 billion Euros in the autumn projection to 12.3 billion Euros. Additionally, the room allocated from the debt brake, which was already available, has slightly increased due to updated estimates, now standing at 15.6 billion Euros. Overall, this calculation suggests that approximately 27.9 billion Euros in debt will be permissible for 2027.
