Investigations by German security authorities into the drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport are reportedly pointing directly toward the Russian military intelligence service, the GRU, according to information obtained by the “Welt am Sonntag”. According to secret investigative documents cited by the newspaper, a suspected GRU member is named as the logistician for the operation.
These findings are expected to form the basis for the Federal Government’s decision regarding whether to hold Russia responsible for the attack. Intelligence circles suggest the suspects are a Russian national identified as L. and a White Russian identified as K. L. is alleged to have organized the preparation and logistics, and authorities attribute him to the GRU. Russia has rejected all involvement.
According to investigators, L. entered Germany via Turkey before later flying from Berlin-Brandenburg airport towards Serbia. The “Welt am Sonntag” reports that upon his entry, investigators were already aware that the Russian was associated with the GRU environment; however, he was not observed following his arrival. He is reportedly back in Russia at the present time.
The incident occurred late on August 4th, when a drone loaded with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov transport plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport and was subsequently defused. The trail leading to the suspects was partially uncovered through DNA traces found on the drone’s antenna construction.
Authorities believe that the explosives used in Leipzig may have been transported to Germany via Bulgaria and Serbia. Investigators suspect the materials were conveyed inside cavities of trucks before being hidden in earth deposits.
