German MPs Urge Europe for Stronger Diplomatic Initiatives in Iran Conflict

Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour has urged the German government to adopt a much more proactive diplomatic strategy when attending the EU summit in Cyprus regarding the conflict in Iran.

Speaking to RTL and ntv, Nouripour expressed his belief that European leaders must create a comprehensive plan, establishing a clear roadmap of engagement to ensure progress. He criticized the current regional approach, stating that Europe is merely acting like a “ping-pong referee” simply watching the escalating conflict without proposing its own concrete solutions or initiatives.

According to Nouripour, mere discussions about how “horrible” the situation is insufficient; the focus must shift entirely to strategically planning which specific actions can be taken to ensure that Europe is actually heard. He pointed to Pakistan’s model of providing a structured diplomatic platform for the warring parties in Islamabad as a positive example of how engagement should work.

The Green politician emphasized the necessity of improved dialogue within the EU itself. Furthermore, he argued that diplomatic efforts require tangible physical presence. He stressed that if one wishes to show solidarity, one must be on the ground in the region, as this is how credibility is built. In his view, effective diplomacy is simply a process of continuous conversation-talking until a definitive outcome has been achieved.
