CDU digital politician Ralph Brinkhaus argues for the establishment of worldwide standards concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Brinkhaus emphasized that even if development were to temporarily halt, global standards for the role and handling of AI must be created. He stressed that these standards should serve as a “framework and guidance,” rather than acting as a “regulatory brake on innovation.” Brinkhaus added that he believes Germany is well-placed to actively push this process forward.
The push for regulation comes amid recent demands from major tech companies for a pause in development, following several alarming AI incidents. Brinkhaus welcomed the fact that the debate has been opened, noting that it is noteworthy that the initiative originated with the tech industry. However, he stated that the discussion needs a stronger presence on the German political stage, while simultaneously expressing skepticism that the attempt to slow AI development will yield any serious results.
Meanwhile, The Left politician Donata Vogtschmidt is pushing for even stricter international regulation. Vogtschmidt contends that the European AI Act in the EU should be tightened, not deregulated. Furthermore, she expressed hope that the UN will quickly agree on initial “red lines” governing the international deployment of artificial intelligence.
