Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) lauded the passing of the so-called “fuel discount” (Tankrabatt) by the Bundestag, calling it a crucial signal intended to relieve citizens during the current economic crisis. The tax reduction, approved by the parliament, will lower taxes on gasoline and diesel by approximately 17 cents per liter, starting May 1st, and is initially set to last for two months.
Beyond this domestic measure, Klingbeil announced ongoing efforts regarding potential tax changes for corporations. He confirmed that discussions concerning the implementation of a windfall tax in Brussels continue. Speaking after meeting with the European Commission, he stressed his commitment to ensuring that companies which generate excessive profits during times of crisis are held accountable, referencing the successful application of this tax instrument back in 2022. However, he noted that there is currently significant disagreement on this measure within the federal government.
Furthermore, Klingbeil reported that reforms to the income tax are being prepared with the specific goal of easing the financial burden on small and medium-income earners. He emphasized that such a reform requires serious compensatory financing, an objective that the coalition has reportedly agreed upon. The aim is to deliver a noticeable relief to consumers, and efforts will be made to ensure that large corporations pass on the reduction in fuel prices to the public.
