CDU Calls for Compromise and Broad Reform of Income Tax Code

Fritz Güntzler, the CDU faction’s financial policy spokesman in the Bundestag, stressed the crucial need for openness to compromises during the ongoing debate regarding income tax reform. Speaking to the news portal “T-Online” on Wednesday, Güntzler stated that if the tax structure is to be smoothed out overall and performance is to be rewarded more significantly, politicians must remain open to compromise. This follows a recent statement by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), who had shown willingness to moderately increase taxes on high earners. Güntzler affirmed that the Chancellor was correct in pointing out the necessity of a complete overhaul of the current tax scale. For the Union party, the highest priority in this planned reform is achieving a palpable reduction in the burden for the broad middle class, a group Güntzler noted has been heavily strained in recent years. He concluded that the current debate clearly demonstrates one thing: what is truly required is a comprehensive and cohesive reform of the entire income tax tariff, rather than merely isolated discussions centered on specific percentages.
