According to research conducted by the “Tagesspiegel” podcast, “104 Hours Blackout” German states are handling information about attacks on the electrical grid in highly variable ways. While some states have been forthcoming with detailed statistics concerning sabotage and disruption incidents in 2024 and 2025, others have classified their data.
For instance, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg, and Bremen publicly disclosed significant figures. NRW specifically reported a total of 375 politically motivated crimes against energy providers and facilities, predominantly linked to the left-wing spectrum. Hamburg registered three instances, including one cyberattack targeting a local utility company’s website, while Bremen documented two separate incidents.
However, other regions maintained a level of opacity. Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein, and Baden-Württemberg, for example, designated their corresponding data as classified material.
Furthermore, not all states reported consistent patterns. Several regions, including Hesse, Thuringia, and Saxony, stated that they were unaware of any such relevant actions. Conversely, individual cases were recorded in Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. These specific reports included an instance of an electric pole being cut with a reciprocating saw in Albig (Rheinhessen), as well as an attack near the Tesla factory in Grünheide, for which an alleged confession note was found from the left-extremist “Vulkangruppe”.
