German Official Calls for National Heat Protection Plan Amid Climate Adaptation Oversight Concerns

Jochen Flasbarth, the State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment and a member of the SPD, emphasized the urgent need for improved heat protection measures. In an interview with ZDF’s “Heute Journal,” Flasbarth stated, “I believe the lesson we learned this summer is that next summer we also need a national action plan that brings together everything from the individual states.” The SPD politician added, “We have to improve in both climate protection and climate adaptation.”

He also criticized the Federal Audit Office, noting that a program titled “Climate Adaptation in Social Institutions” run by the Federal Ministry for the Environment has been heavily criticized by the Audit Office for exceeding the ministry’s competencies.
