Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) visited Lars Klingbeil (SPD) in his Lower Saxony constituency. The Federal Press Office subsequently disseminated carefully curated photos and videos from the meeting, characterizing the encounter as harmonious. Official sources stated that the dinner, which took place in Walsrode in the Heidekreis district on Wednesday evening, was used to discuss “the current state of the coalition and necessary next steps for reforms”. Furthermore, Klingbeil is scheduled to accompany the Chancellor on a troop visit to the Bundeswehr training grounds in Munster on Thursday.
These seemingly peaceful images arrive following reports from a previous coalition committee meeting where Merz and Klingbeil were reportedly engaged in a heated exchange. Although the Chancellor publicly denied the conflict, Klingbeil provided an indirect confirmation when, during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, he remarked that it was acceptable “to discuss with passion” and that he would “not overvalue” such incidents.
