Protesters Clash with Police as Berlin Kicks Off Walpurgisnacht

The notorious Walpurgis night in Berlin began with minor confrontations between demonstrators and the police. Several thousand left-wing activists marched through the districts of Neukölln and Kreuzberg during a demonstration themed “Take back the Night”. During the march, they chanted slogans such as “Too many individual cases” and shouted insults directed at law enforcement.

The protest saw instances of pyrotechnics being ignited and physical altercations breaking out. According to a dts reporter, at least one woman, who was wearing a sash, was briefly detained by police. The assembly was declared concluded by the organizers shortly before its planned end, and the majority of participants departed quickly and peacefully afterward.

Historically, clashes between left-wing demonstrators and the police are not uncommon in Berlin, usually occurring during the nights of May 1st and the evening of May 1st. However, reports indicate that the level of violence in recent years has shown a noticeable decrease.
