Sebastian Fiedler, the SPD parliamentary spokesman, has called for increased protection of Jewish life across Germany. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Fiedler noted that the tendency for a significant part of the Jewish community to withdraw from public life-even choosing not to visibly wear symbols like kippahs or Stars of David out of fear-constitutes a “dramatic development” that should be treated as a serious warning sign.
According to Fiedler, the society must make every effort to remain open and tolerant. He stressed the necessity of openly naming the serious issues concerning antisemitism, which plague both the political right and the left. He argued that the state must confront these issues consistently and utilize all means available under the rule of law. Specifically, he believes that the proposed tightening of criminal law regarding hate speech and propaganda will help create an effective institutional response.
The SPD politician further demanded that security forces and authorities take proactive steps to ensure that Jews feel safe in Germany. Addressing the long-term fight against prejudice, Fiedler emphasized that political education is crucial in combating antisemitism. He concluded by stating clearly that “the protection of Jewish life and solidarity with Jews must be guaranteed in our country”.
