Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) stated that, despite extensive security measures in place, there remains a residual risk of drone attacks at German airports. Speaking to the TV channel “Welt” on Thursday, Bilger acknowledged that the federal government has undertaken significant steps, such as implementing systems to detect drones early as they approach airport grounds. He added that countermeasures against such drones are feasible, but stressed that the risk persists because airport areas are vast and spread out, and because the technology of those who intend to disrupt air traffic-or do something worse-is constantly improving. Consequently, he emphasized that these efforts must continue to be intensified. According to the CDU politician, the individuals who attempted to disrupt air traffic with drones seem well aware of the current precautions. He noted that in cases where explosives are used, the situation involves a serious escalation, and he expressed relief that such incidents did not happen in Leipzig.
