Former Federal Finance Minister and FDP Chairman Christian Lindner believes that CDU leader Friedrich Merz faces tremendous pressure just one year into his opposition leadership role. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Lindner argued that Merz had severely underestimated how coalitions involving left-wing parties impact bourgeois political policy, leading him to conclude that Merz cannot keep his stated promises. According to Lindner, the critique Merz previously levied against the FDP regarding its role in the coalition government (Ampel) is now returning to him “like a boomerange”. He pointed out that facing the predecessor government’s track record, Merz must defend the need for higher debt, higher taxes, and increased bureaucracy.
While keeping his assessment of Merz’s chances as Chancellor open-stating that “it will be decided later”-Lindner also praised Merz’s predecessor. He highlighted that the previous leader possessed the courage to defy the “Red-Green” agenda concerning the era of change (“Zeitenwende”), expressing hope that Friedrich Merz can similarly build up momentum.
Beyond politics, Lindner commented on the German economy, noting that economic substance is fading and deindustrialization is accelerating. He attributed this decline not solely to geopolitical conflicts, but also to the widespread disappointment that the anticipated economic turnaround is failing to materialize.
