The chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Jens Spahn, has reportedly nominated Martin Plum for the role of the faction’s new legal advisor. According to the “Tagesspiegel”, which cited sources within the CDU/CSU faction, Spahn informed the parliamentary group leadership on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, the CDU wing of the leadership is scheduled to vote on re-election, with Spahn himself seeking to run again for faction chairman.
The position of legal advisor is currently vacant following the departure of Ansgar Heveling. Heveling is set to be elected President of the Federal Court of Accounts in May, thereby assuming the mantle as Germany’s highest financial controller. The vacancy had drawn interest from two candidates: Roland Theis from Saarland and Martin Plum from North Rhine-Westphalia. Spahn has proposed Plum, a jurist who has served as a direct candidate in the Bundestag representative for Viersen since 2021.
