SPD Leader Advocates Pausing Raise in Bundestag Members’ Allowances Amid Economic Concerns

Within the SPD parliamentary group, resistance is growing against the scheduled increase in the allowances received by members of the Bundestag this year. Dirk Wiese, the party’s first parliamentary managing director, informed the “Rheinische Post” that deputies do not set their own allowances. He clarified that the payments are automatically adjusted according to wage development and could even decrease.

Although the process has proven reliable in the past, Wiese stated that given the current economic climate and forthcoming reforms, it would be appropriate to forgo the planned adjustment this year. This stance echoes previous calls, such as that from SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf, who also advocated for the suspension of the pending allowance hike.

Since 2014, the allowances for Bundestag members have been linked to the nominal wage index and thus increase automatically. Had the scheduled adjustments taken place by July 1st, an increase of 4.2 percent would have been due.
