Omid Nouripour, the Green Party’s Deputy President of the Bundestag and a foreign policy expert, sharply criticized the current German government’s handling of Iran policy, specifically targeting the role of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU).
Speaking to the TV station “Welt” on Tuesday, Nouripour stated that the central problem facing Germany is that the country is operating reactively, merely waiting to see what the United States and Iran do. He argued that Europe, being massively affected by the situation, needs to move beyond reaction and adopt its own proactive initiatives to return to a negotiating table.
Nouripour reserved particular criticism for Foreign Minister Wadephul, stating that he misses the German Foreign Minister’s current style. “The highest emotion I’ve seen from him so far is forcefully expressing his concerns” Nouripour remarked. “That is not proactive; it doesn’t help us get back to the negotiating table”.
Furthermore, according to Nouripour, while one could debate the wisdom of the Chancellor taking a clear stand regarding potential Trump cards, the fundamental reality is that Iran feels it has emerged victorious and is therefore trying to dictate terms.
Regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Nouripour called the current situation “beyond acceptable”. He strongly condemned the targeting of civilian freighters by Iran. He noted that while calling for a complete “ceasefire” might be too drastic, avoiding the term altogether is equally unwise, as it could lead to a return to open wartime conflict.
