Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, has issued a positive evaluation of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) following his first year in office. According to Tsahkna, speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” the German government has demonstrated a clear willingness and capacity to assume greater responsibility.
He highlighted that in the current environment of geopolitical uncertainty, Germany has provided necessary leadership. This leadership was evident through sustained support for Ukraine, the increased pressure applied to Russia, and the strengthening of both European security and the unity of the EU and NATO. Tsahkna noted that these measures are vital for establishing Europe’s credibility and securing a just and lasting peace.
In particular, the Foreign Minister commendably focused on the Merz administration’s efforts to bolster European security. A particularly crucial policy decision cited was Germany’s commitment to raising defense expenditures. He argued that this not only strengthens deterrence and solidifies NATO alliances but also empowers Europe to assume a higher degree of responsibility within its partnership structures. Furthermore, Tsahkna noted Germany’s direct practical contributions to regional stability, pointing specifically to the participation in the air monitoring mission in Ämari and the continued presence of troops stationed in Lithuania.
