The Green Party has publicly voiced strong opposition to the upcoming salary increase for members of the Bundestag, slated for July 1st. Helge Limburg, the party’s legal and political spokesperson, stated that increasing the allowances at this time would send the wrong message. Consequently, the Greens advocate for suspending the automatic adjustment mechanism this year. Limburg emphasized that many citizens are already struggling with significantly higher living costs during this never-before-seen crisis and expects the situation to continue worsening.
The sentiment echoes across other major political groups. Wilhelm Gebhard, a member of the CDU in the Bundestag, shared similar concerns, suggesting that society would benefit from practicing frugality during the current crisis. He added that a raise would be poorly timed, leading him to champion the suspension of the increase.
Additionally, several politicians from the SPD have expressed support for foregoing the scheduled raise. Since 2014, the allowances for Bundestag members have been automatically linked to the development of the nominal wage index.
