Dobrindt Dismisses Minority Government Talk, Urges CDU Coalition Compromise for Major Reforms

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is convinced that the current black-red coalition will endure until the full three years remaining in its legislative term. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Wednesday, Dobrindt asserted that there is simply no other option and that attempting any alternative arrangement would be “absolutely absurd”.

According to Dobrindt, a minority government faces insurmountable challenges simply because it lacks a majority in parliament. He questioned how laws could possibly be passed without such a majority.

Looking ahead to the various pending reform initiatives, the minister emphasized that compromise and flexibility are essential. Dobrindt noted that the coalition has undertaken significant reforms, citing the already launched healthcare reforms, as well as planned updates to tax and pension policies. He also highlighted the need to significantly reduce bureaucracy.

Calling these reforms “major undertakings that must be achieved” Dobrindt stressed that if the goal is to organize this within a center-political coalition, then every member must be willing to move away from their established positions. Otherwise, he stated, it will be impossible to reach viable compromises. Furthermore, he stated that this consensus approach reflected the mandate delivered by the Federal Chancellor-a mandate directed not just at the SPD, but at everyone.
