Greens Slams New Heating Law as “Disaster” Questioning Coalition’s Climate Credibility

Katharina Dröge, the parliamentary group leader for the Greens, described the new heating law formulated by the governing coalition (CDU and SPD) as “a disaster and completely irresponsible”. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Thursday, Dröge stated that it is unacceptable for the coalition to allow the use of climate-damaging heating systems even beyond the year 2045. According to her remarks, this development officially causes CDU and SPD to abandon the goal of making Germany climate-neutral by 2045, characterizing the plan as nothing less than “an organized breach” of climate targets and a de facto withdrawal from Germany’s existing Climate Protection Act.

Beyond the environmental concerns, Dröge also criticized the policy on economic grounds, calling it “economic nonsense”. She argued that the law will stifle the major upward trend in the heat pump market while simultaneously driving up costs for all consumers. The Federal Government formally presented the draft of the new Building Modernization Law on Tuesday evening.
