RB Leipzig has secured its place in the Champions League again for the upcoming season. Following the 33rd matchday and a 2-1 victory against St. Pauli, the club has guaranteed at least fourth place in the Bundesliga standings, currently occupying third place.
However, the match did not start well for the Leipzig squad. St. Pauli delivered a surprisingly strong performance, and if the visitors had maintained such form throughout the season, they certainly would not be in the penultimate position. The Hamburg side faced bad luck in the first half, missing a chance when Kaars hit the woodwork.
Xaver Schlager helped rally RB Leipzig, breaking their early slump and giving the hosts the lead with a powerful shot that hit the underside of the bar in added time at halftime.
In the second half, RB Leipzig maintained their offensive pressure. Willi Orban doubled the lead in the 54th minute, heading in a corner delivered by Raum. The Leipzig players remained the dominant side after the second goal, giving St. Pauli little opportunity to attack, though a potential third goal for Leipzig was disallowed due to an offside position.
The game became tense again near the end when St. Paulis Abdoulie Ceesay received the ball and struck hard, securing the late goal in the 86th minute, which ultimately proved to be the equalizer.
Despite the loss, St. Pauli remains in the penultimate spot in the league table and will have to fight against relegation in the final match against Wolfsburg.
Other results from Saturday afternoon included Stuttgart beating Leverkusen 3-1, Hoffenheim defeating Bremen 1-0, and Augsburg overcoming Mönchengladbach 3-1. Later that evening, the heavily threatened VfL Wolfsburg would face the already crowned champion, FC Bayern Munich.
