Public Opinion Challenges CDU Leaders on Migration and Social System Concerns

A survey conducted by the polling institute Insa for “Bild am Sonntag” indicates that statements made by the ruling government regarding migration policy are met with wide-ranging skepticism among the public.

The findings reveal substantial doubts about the effectiveness of proposed solutions. Specifically, only eleven percent of respondents agreed with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) when he stated that large parts of the migration problem have now been solved; a significant majority of 78% disagreed, while another 11% declined to answer. This hesitancy extends even within the Union party, where roughly one in five members agreed with the assessment, and 73% disagreed.

Similarly critical were the statements attributed to Working Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD). She had claimed: “No one migrates into our social systems”. Only 20% of respondents agreed with this assessment, while 57% disagreed. Twenty-three percent did not answer or declined to give an opinion. Skepticism was also evident among SPD supporters, with 45% disagreeing and 35% supporting her statement.

The survey, for “Bild am Sonntag”, was conducted by Insa on May 7th and 8th, 2026, surveying a total of 1,003 people.
