Schulze Warns of Political Turmoil from Potential AfD Sweep in State Elections

Sven Schulze, the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt and a member of the CDU, issued a warning regarding the potential outcomes of the state parliament election scheduled for September. Speaking to the Rheinische Post, he cautioned that if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) were successful in achieving an absolute majority, thereby pushing the SPD out of the state parliament, it would lead to massive political turbulence throughout the region.

According to current polling data, the AfD leads significantly, with figures ranging between 38 and 41 percent. The CDU stands at 25 to 26 percent, while the SPD polls between 6 and 7 percent. Despite the numbers, Schulze emphasized his current strong position in the race to become Minister-President, stating that he is “clearly ahead” after only ten months in office. He reassured the public that the election is focused solely on how Saxony-Anhalt will be governed over the next five years, rather than being a referendum message for Berlin, declaring his intent to campaign hard for every vote.

Furthermore, the CDU politician stressed that the AfD “is no longer simply a matter of the East”. When questioned about whether this election would determine the fate of the national Chancellor, Schulze indicated that federal politics are already closely tracking the issue. He stated, “I certainly don’t need to say more about heading toward Berlin” also noting that Saxony-Anhalt will chair the Minister-President Conference beginning in October 2026. In response to inquiries concerning the CDU’s declaration of incompatibility regarding the Left party, Schulze dismissed the topic, asserting, “I am not currently concerned with such questions”.
