The Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) has urged the Federal Government to lower the electricity tax to the European minimum ahead of the coalition talks between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Tuesday evening. According to a VKU spokesperson speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, the coalition would be well-advised to dedicate the budgetary leeway created by the expected withdrawal of the Relief Premium specifically toward reducing the electricity tax.
The VKU spokesperson further stated that, ideally, the electricity tax should be lowered to the European minimum for all consumers in order to reliably alleviate the burden on private households and medium-sized businesses starting next year. Specifically, the tax could be reduced from 2.05 cents per kilowatt-hour to as little as 0.1 cent per kilowatt-hour.
