A meeting of the coalition’s leadership from the CDU, CSU, and SPD is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the Chancellery, following the recent failure of the “relief premium” subsidy program.
Early in the afternoon, key figures arrived for initial preliminary discussions among the CDU/CSU representatives, including CSU leader Markus Söder, CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, and CSU state group leader Alexander Hoffmann. The main items on the agenda are expected to include potential alternatives to the failed relief premium. Furthermore, participants plan to discuss the broader government budget and the overall reform roadmap. Nevertheless, political expectations surrounding the meeting are reportedly low. To date, neither a press conference following the meeting nor a final results document has been announced.
The political priorities of the party leaders were recently spotlighted at the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) national congress taking place in Berlin. Yesterday and today, both Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and SPD leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas delivered lengthy speeches. Merz, who faced mixed reactions from union members earlier that day, appealed for support for deep structural reforms in the social welfare system, announced plans to modernize works council participation, and called for broad societal unity. Klingbeil had made a similar call for cohesion the day before, while Bas clarified that she does not believe the planned overhaul of the social welfare system should imply budget cuts.
The coalition atmosphere has suffered recently due to escalating internal disagreements. The lingering tension from the last crisis meeting in the Villa Borsig, combined with falling polling numbers for coalition members-especially the Chancellery’s approval ratings, which have hit historical lows-suggests that the upcoming coalition committee meeting is intended as an attempt to boost morale within the federal government itself.
