Leif-Erik Holm, who is positioned as the AfD’s candidate for the premiership of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, indicated during an interview with Politico that his party would support a potential coalition government formed by the CDU’s Union. However, he stressed that the viability of this support is entirely dependent on the practical policy issues-or “the factual situation”-that are ultimately decided upon.
According to Holm, the central demand from the AfD is the implementation of severe austerity measures. He emphasized the need to cut spending, stating that Germany cannot continue accumulating debt. Crucially, he opposed any increases in taxes, stressing instead the goal of lowering them.
In parallel, Holm called for fundamental interventions within the social welfare state. Specifically regarding health insurance, he demanded a reallocation of costs, asserting that funds currently used to support recipients of basic welfare payments (Bürgergeld) should be diverted elsewhere. Furthermore, he argued for a drastic overhaul of energy policy, warning that current “system costs” are becoming unsustainable and are “crushing” the economy.
