CSU Suggests Renewed Fuel Discounts Could Loom Amid Geopolitical Instability

Alexander Hoffmann, a leading figure in the CSU party, indicated that he does not rule out an extension of the gas and fuel discounts. He stated to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that if the geopolitical climate necessitates an immediate stimulus in July, they might have to implement one. While acknowledging that the current energy tax reduction, including the gas discount, provided temporary relief at gas stations, Hoffmann emphasized that the coalition is monitoring the possibility of prolonged tension in the Middle East or instability in the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that while the state cannot absorb the entire financial burden of such a crisis, they are not ruling out the use of additional relief measures. He cautioned, however, that the political discussions will remain open-ended, preventing the imposition of any “thought bans”.

Regarding the failed “relief premium” Hoffmann argued that it was never a fundamental consideration within the coalition’s planning, but merely an optional addition. He maintained that the premium was never intended to act as a substitute for state-led relief, but rather as an extra, voluntary option. For this reason, he suggested that abandoning it was simple. He concluded that maintaining an instrument lacking sufficient support was pointless. Hoffmann added that the funds that would have been used for the premium can now be diverted to other areas, providing more flexibility, which they plan to utilize for developing their own state relief packages.
