Germany Confirms Canada’s Membership is Not a Priority, Yet Cooperation Advances

According to a government spokesperson, integrating Canada into the European Union is not currently a top governmental priority for Berlin, though it has not been ruled out. During questioning by the dts news agency on Wednesday, spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that while Canada and the EU already maintain an “enormously close relationship”-citing the NATO membership and numerous transnational ties-the process would continue along existing lines of cooperation. He emphasized that the free trade agreement has already established a wide range of collaborative options, and this path will remain the focus.

This official stance comes amid ongoing discussions about Europe’s future. For instance, Finnish President Alexander Stubb recently suggested the idea of a “much larger European Union” adding that the decision of whether or not Canada joins must ultimately be made by Canada itself. Meanwhile, domestic pressure is building in Canada; a recent poll conducted by the newspaper “The Globe and Mail” revealed that nearly 60 percent of Canadians favor reviewing the possibility of Canada’s EU membership.
