According to Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliamentary affairs manager, the visit by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to the SPD parliamentary group next Tuesday connects to a local tradition from the Sauerland. Wiese told the “Rheinische Post” that he views the interaction through the spirit of an old socialist craftsman from the region: “One sometimes has to wrestle hard over issues, but always in a solution-oriented manner-and at the end of the day, we should be able to raise a pint together at the bar”.
Wiese further added that Merz coming to the group meeting is a “very positive signal for the ongoing cooperation within this coalition”. He noted that the recent weeks had been difficult for them and that they must find their footing together again. He stressed the need to demonstrate that they can collectively and resolutely tackle the domestic and foreign challenges that lie ahead.
In a historical context, both Wiese and Merz ran in the Hochsauerlandkreis during the 2025 federal election, with Merz ultimately winning the direct mandate over Wiese. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the CDU told the “Rheinische Post” that a reciprocal visit from Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil is “currently” not planned.
