Merz Urges Cooperation and Decisive Action for German Coalition Reform

During a visit to the SPD parliamentary group on Tuesday, CDU leader Friedrich Merz emphasized the urgent need for the federal government to reform and make swift decisions. Merz stated that although the CDU has a majority in the Bundestag, it must prove to the electorate that this majority is capable of enacting policies that are not only politically feasible but also widely accepted and respected by the population.

Beyond systemic changes, Merz stressed the necessity of stability and confidence within the government. He noted that while the CDU and SPD remain different parties, he appealed to both parliamentary groups to stop publicly drawing dividing lines. Instead, he advocated for focusing on shared commonalities and treating their collective responsibility to Germany with the same seriousness with which the coalition agreement was formulated.

Merz acknowledged that the coalition’s mood “is currently not in the best shape”. Nevertheless, he expressed strong confidence that they would overcome this dip and demonstrate the nation’s strengths. He concluded his remarks by assuring that the majority of Germans see the opportunities available in Germany, and that he intended to discuss these specific national chances with his SPD colleagues.
