Multiple members of the pension commission have publicly denied that the committee reached an agreement to raise the long-term retirement age to 70. According to the German newspaper “Handelsblatt”, the number 70 does not appear in the initial draft of the final report. Furthermore, the specific years and associated new entry ages mentioned by the “Bild” newspaper are also inaccurate.
Sources suggest that the circulation of these rumors might be influenced by political forces external to the commission itself. Commission participants report a period of “enormously high nervousness”. The discussions have become so volatile that, for the first time, the stability of the governing coalition is reportedly dependent on the results of the commission’s work. Sources within the commission allege rumors that the SPD might withdraw from the process, a move which the Union (CDU/CSU) could potentially interpret as a significant break within the governing coalition.
