Saxony-Anhalt Recovers Intel Land to Build High-Tech Park Amid Major Tech Shift

The state of Saxony-Anhalt has purchased the parcels of land in Magdeburg from Intel that were initially earmarked for the semiconductor company. The state government announced that the notarization of the land purchase agreement between Intel and Saxony-Anhalt marked “another important step toward the long-term development of the Saxony-Anhalt High-Tech Park”.

Since Intel’s original investment decision for Magdeburg in 2022 and the subsequent acquisition of land, the areas have been prepared for development since 2024 by the state-owned High-Tech Park Saxony-Anhalt GmbH. This preparation included complex permitting and development measures, as well as setting up robust energy, water, transport, and digital infrastructure to best facilitate the settlement of other companies for the park’s growth.

Both the state and the federal government were prepared to heavily fund the Intel project, with the federal government alone considering an allocation of nearly ten billion euros. However, the US conglomerate ultimately abandoned the endeavor last year, following an initial suspension of the plans a year earlier.

The cost the state must now pay for the Intel lands was not disclosed on Friday. Preliminary estimates suggested a “three-digit million amount” for approximately 400 hectares belonging to Intel, which is part of a total industrial area of around 1,100 hectares.

Jürgen Ude, the State Secretary for Structural Change, stated on Friday that the contract signing now provides the foundation necessary to actively develop the site’s existing potential. He noted that the primary objective from the beginning was to permanently secure the strategic developmental capacity of the location.

Even without Intel, Saxony-Anhalt intends to transform the current farmland into a high-tech park. The goal is to establish an internationally connected high-tech location focused on technology-intensive industries, innovative value chains, and modern infrastructure and innovation concepts. The Saxony-Anhalt High-Tech Park is set to offer space for companies in microelectronics, digital industry, artificial intelligence, data-driven technologies, and other technology-oriented sectors, with continuous efforts being made to advance the infrastructural requirements for modern and high-performing industrial growth.
