Young Liberals Push FDP for Broader Profile and Core Liberalism Amid Leadership Reshuffle

Ahead of the FDP board election, the Young Liberals are advocating for the party to embrace a broad range of views. According to a position paper from the party’s youth organization, which was reported by the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” it is crucial to respect “the diversity of liberal currents, instead of sacrificing one to appease another”.

The party should, they argue, avoid being swayed by “the loudness of political extremes”. Instead, the FDP must clearly articulate its own stances and defend them consistently. Nadin Zaya, a candidate for the party presidency nominated by the youth group, told RND that she wants the FDP to “reflect the entire spectrum of liberalism, and not just a selected part”.

Finn Flebbe, another internal figure, warned potential FDP leadership against superficiality, stating to RND that convincing people is impossible if one reneges on a promise the very next day. On the policy front, the FDP should push for a healthcare system modeled after Switzerland and the complete legalization of all drugs, provided they are distributed under regulation. Furthermore, Flebbe suggested a radically simplified tax structure featuring a flat tax and a tax-free allowance equal to the full-time minimum wage, arguing that those working full-time for minimum wage should pay no taxes.

The FDP will select a new party leader at the last weekend of May. The only current candidate is Wolfgang Kubicki, the party’s long-serving vice chairman and former Bundestag President, a figure some in the party fear might push the party to the right. Martin Hagen, the designated general secretary selected by Kubicki, described the leadership vote as a moment to define the party’s direction. This election was necessary after the current party leader, Christian Dürr, was pressured to resign from the party leadership following setbacks in local elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

Zaya, who is running for one of the non-presidential vice-chair positions, previously served as the chair of the Young Liberals in Lower Saxony for four years. Meanwhile, Flebbe is campaigning for a seat on the FDP federal board.
