Union defense politicians are demanding that Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) develop a concrete strategy to counter the recently announced reduction in U.S. military contributions to NATO.
The U.S. military scaling back of its commitments-specifically, a considerable reduction in key military capabilities provided to the NATO Force Model-was communicated last week by Pentagon official Alexander Velez-Green to defense ministers from other member states at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Thomas Röwekamp (CDU), chairman of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag, called the U.S. announcement a “wake-up call for Germany and Europe to finally assume greater strategic responsibility for the defense of peace, freedom, and democracy on our continent” emphasizing that Germany must take the lead. Röwekamp stressed that the required response must not merely involve isolated procurement measures, but necessitate a comprehensive strategic plan addressing all necessary acquisitions. The goal, he clarified, is to build capabilities and close existing gaps, even amid changes in NATO planning.
Similar sentiments were voiced by Thomas Erndl (CSU), the Union parliamentary spokesman for defense. Erndl stated that the U.S. announcement means the Bundeswehr must become operational and deterrence-ready as quickly as possible. This requires accelerated procurement and a consistent increase in defense capabilities. The Union faction has long pressured the Defense Minister to speed up all planning categories, insisting that Germany must rapidly develop its own strategic capabilities and close current gaps.
The German government is currently consulting on the appropriate response. Röwekamp confirmed that the path forward must be established in a verifiable time and procurement plan. He noted that the recently presented military strategy of the Bundeswehr, alongside the capability profiles developed by the defense ministry, already clearly define specific military needs.
