Cultural Minister Wolfram Weimer (non-partisan) criticized the high prices of DFB jerseys for the Football World Cup. Weimer told the “Rheinische Post” that fan culture is also a part of German culture, but that culture must be affordable for everyone. He added that everyone should be able to afford football jerseys to support their team in the national colors, especially since he views football as a “lively part of our society”. Aydan Özoguz, the chair of the Bundestag’s sports committee and an SPD member, also criticized the expensive DFB jersey. Özoguz told the “Rheinische Post”: “I would like the prices to be more fan- and family-friendly”. She warned that it would be a shame if the jerseys merely remained expensive items on the shelf instead of making Germany more vibrant during the World Cup.
