Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) has announced a “sustainable reform” of the long-term care insurance system. She emphasized that the proposed changes must focus primarily on structural modifications, noting that despite continuously rising deficits, “we haven’t dared to implement a sustainable care reform for too long” she told Bild am Sonntag. Warken made it clear that her goal is not simply a financial adjustment; she does not aim for a unilateral reform focused solely on stabilizing the financial situation. Instead, she intends to implement structural changes-aiming for a system that is “simpler and faster”-while simultaneously dealing with existing austerity requirements and offering stronger support to family caregivers. A key focus of the minister’s plans is implementing measures aimed at preventing or delaying the onset of care dependency. According to Warken, “through targeted support and effective preventive measures, we must delay the need for care as much as possible” stressing that this is primarily in the interest of the individuals concerned.
