Under the auspices of the European Union, the German Armed Forces intend to continue equipping the Ukrainian military to defend against Russia. Major General Olaf Rohde stated to Background Sicherheit & Verteidigung for Tagesspiegel and Handelsblatt that, “From a military perspective, we should continue the EU training mission for Ukraine.” He noted that the training is highly successful, having been completed by 29,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
This Tuesday, EU Defense Ministers are meeting in Wicklow, Ireland, to discuss the future of the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) for Ukraine. A formal decision is expected in November. Part of these considerations includes the possibility of relocating the training to Ukraine, depending on the success of further peace negotiations. Regarding the location of this training, Rohde explained that “this must be answered politically-at least for the period after a ceasefire, there are corresponding plans in place.”
